JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Prudency hearings on whether Mississippi Power should be able to get customers to pay for its Kemper County power plant have been postponed. The Public Utilities Staff sought the delay. Monitors say some spending was imprudent, which could lead regulators to charge costs to Mississippi Power.

BRANDON, Miss. (AP) - Rankin County authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a Hinds County deputy and his wife. Sheriff Bryan Bailey says the bodies of Chris Smith and his wife, Amber, were found in a bedroom. He says an autopsy will be conducted. Smith had been with Hinds sheriff's department since 1994.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Entergy's first-quarter net income more than doubled. The power company benefited from a cold winter. Entergy earned $401.2 million, or $2.24 per share. That's up sharply from $161.4 million, or 90 cents per share, a year earlier.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The University of Mississippi Medical Center will merge some functions with a neighboring rehabilitation hospital. UMMC will close its inpatient rehabilitation unit over the next two years and move it into the Methodist Rehabilitation Center. UMMC and Methodist will continue as separate organizations.
