Who is Pastor Terry Jones?

TAMPA - So who is this pastor that's creating such controversy?

He has a pretty interesting past.

Terry Jones is a former hotel manager from Tennessee who worked as a missionary in Germany.

He started his own small church there, until his church kicked him out.

One report says he was forced out of the country on allegations of tax evasion and misuse of church funds.

And he's had his fair share of problems in Gainesville too.

The property appraiser there said the church was violating Florida's tax exemption law, because he was running a furniture business out of the church.

Public records show he owns a beach condo in Pinellas County on Treasure Island, but neighbors say he's been renting it out for several years.

Public records also show he owns several SUVs, a motorcycle, an 18-foot boat, and a home in Slidell, Louisiana.

Jones calls himself "doctor," but the title comes from an honorary degree from the California Graduate School of Theology, an obscure school that boasts that it's so independent, it's never been accredited.

His church in Gainesville has been around since 1986. Today, The Smoking Gun posted what it says is the church's "rule book," which demands obedience from church members, and directives to cut off most contact with relatives.
