FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - A 115-year-old temperature record in Fort Smith has been retired and a 31-year-old record in Fayetteville is history.
According to the National Weather Service the high temperature on Monday in Fort Smith was 111 degrees, five degrees hotter than the previous mark of 106 degrees in 1896.
In Fayetteville, the mercury peaked at 105 degrees, four degrees hotter than what was reported on the same day in 1980.
The weather service has issued an excessive heat warning for 14 counties in western and southern Arkansas, while a heat advisory was in effect for the rest of the state.
More triple-digit heat is expected for the rest of the week, with only a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms through the period.
