MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The heat continues to sizzle across the Mid-South. Temperatures are expected to hover near the 100 degree mark Tuesday with the heat index around 110. A heat advisory is in effect through Wednesday evening.

Memphis area cooling centers will be open at Ed Rice Community Center, Bickford Community Center, Riverview Community Center and Orange Mound Community Center.

If you cannot make it to a cooling center, you are encouraged to go to a public library or another public facility.

Keep yourself hydrated, water is best. Protect yourself from the sun; dress for the heat by wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside, go inside or take a break if the heat is unbearable. When possible, re-schedule strenuous activities for early morning or evening hours.

Don't forget your pets, as they can suffer from heat exhaustion and stroke as well. Never leave your pet inside a car during warm weather, and be alert for signs of heat stress, which includes heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid pulse, vomiting and a red or purple tongue.

Also, MLGW will not cut off power for non-payment if the heat index exceeds 100 degrees within a 24-hour period. Check on neighbors, especially the disabled and elderly, to make sure they are staying cool.
