UNION CITY, Tenn. - Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has ended production at its Union City plant.
In a statement Monday morning, plant spokesman Clint Smith said workers will be paid for the next 60 days.
United Steelworkers Union local Vice President Dale Carroll said the union was told Sunday that Goodyear sent the state required notification of its shutdown, according to KYTN radio.
Goodyear had announced on Feb. 10 that it intended to close the West Tennessee plant by the end of 2011.
The union said night shift employees were told to take their belongings with them Saturday night and day shift workers will have access to pick up personal items Monday, but tire production is at an end.
The plant had employed about 1,900 people from West Tennessee and western Kentucky.
