Suspect in Custody for Subway Robberies

The clarity of surveillance video is what police credit with receiving enough tips to nab a suspect in two armed robberies at Memphis area Subway's this week.

"Tipsters used his clothing to identify him," said Lieutenant, Mike Embrey with Memphis Police.

The man caught on camera during the robberies was wearing a dark hat and sweatshirt both times. In Tuesday's robbery at a Subway location on Getwell he's described as wearing a Tennessee Titans sweatshirt. In Wednesday's robbery at another store on Hickory Hill it's a University of Memphis sweatshirt. Police say each time he posed as a customer before showing a gun and demanding money.

"A lot of robberies of food establishments of this nature (the suspect) will pose as customers to get the register open," Embrey said.

The sports sweatshirt wearing robbery suspect may have craved cash from more places than just Subway however. Police are running down possible connections to other armed robberies at food chains. Police are still investigating armed robberies at two Little Caesar's locations on Ridgeway and Park. They were hit earlier this month.

"Male suspect comes in, clerk opens register, he takes out the money…it's almost identical," according to Embrey.

Police in Memphis also confirm working jointly with police on a Little Caesar's armed robbery from November 11th in Olive Branch.

"Information on that is that a white male carrying a pistol and a revolver came into the business at about 9pm, pointed weapons at both cashiers and employees working, and had them empty registers," Major Tim Presley with Olive Branch Police said.

Tips on the identity of the Subway armed robber came in almost immediately after releasing the surveillance video, said police. The case is still under investigation. But will be prosecuted federally for the purpose of ensuring stricter sentencing for crimes committed with firearms.
