MEMPHIS, Tenn. -
"It was really disturbing to finally realize this baby, someone has left this baby," said Melanie Smith.
Smith, who was shopping at the Walmart on Winchester in Memphis Sunday afternoon, says she first took notice of the abandoned little girl right after getting her groceries and checking out.
"She was just kind of by herself in between lanes where no one was working," said Smith.
Smith says she waited a minute...then another....and finally walked over.
"I was just kind of playing with her, saying hey sweetie, you got an apple, you're playing with your phone? I stood there long enough for a Walmart employee to think I was the little girl's mother. She said is that not your baby, you've been standing there for a while?" said Smith.
Smith says the decision was then made to get on the intercom in hopes of finding the 2 year-old's parents.
"She was too young to say where is momma, too young to say her name," she said.
The toddler did begin pointing says Smith.
"So we put her in the basket and rolled her around the store hoping she would recognize someone. They (Walmart employees) got some pillows, made her comfortable in the basket and she fell asleep," smith recalled.
But after laps around the store, at least 8 or 9 pages over the intercom describing her and a call to police, no one came to claim the little girl. Leaving shoppers like Smith wondering what happened? Who did she belong to? And how long had she been left by herself?
"Before I saw her, how many minutes was she standing there alone?" wonders Smith.
According to the Department of Children's Services the 2 year-old has been identified. DCS also says while her family has been contacted, she remains in foster care for now. A spokesperson says they are still investigating the circumstances surrounding what happened.
