MEMPHIS, Tenn. - "I'm just a Memphian that lives and cares for my city."
Silky Sullivan prides himself on being an average citizen. His real name is Thomas Daniel Patrick Sullivan, but he goes by Silky Sullivan, the name of a race horse best known for his come -from- behind racing style.
"I'm not a lawyer I'm not all these people but that's all we've had down there, go down there and do a roll list on the people down there, name one thing they've done ," says Sullivan.
He proudly displays his three time Mardi Gras King memorabilia, and he's traveled the world as an ambassador for Memphis' barbeque tradition. For 37 years he's ran Silky O' Sullivan'`s on Beale street, one quality he says makes him fit to run Memphis.
"I'm smart, I'm a smart businessman, I've done a lot of things, if you don't think I'm a smart business man ask Pat O' Brien's that used to be down the street."
But the one thing that Sullivan says has him most passionate about being mayor is the Pyramid.
"Stop it from being made Memphis Bubbaville of the U.S, stop it from being the largest bait shop on the Mississippi River, stop it from being shall I say redneck institution."
Sullivan says he has a vision for the Pyramid and it includes running a monorail from St Jude, as someone who has the only cement molding of founder Danny Thomas' footprints, he's a hard core believer the Pyramid should become part of the Saint Jude family.
"I want to make the U.N for the children, I wanna take every country and put cubicles in there and have how children live throughout the world where you can tour in there."
When it comes to cutting down on crime, Sullivan says he would get tough with the lawyers, judge and DA's and fight the legislature for tougher laws.
"That's the problem with crime we have no bite in it, we have no bite in it, go down there and sit and laugh at the lawyers writing up dismissed, dismissed."
He says the racial divide should be history.
"We just got to do best to understand each other and live and let live not be saying A here and B there we got to put it together."
And when it comes to attracting businesses to Memphis, he says you've got to add perks.
"Well you got to give them incentives that's what they're doing across state line, go down to Southaven, other places, they giving them tax breaks."
At the end of the day he asks Memphis to help him make Memphis better.
"I believe in Memphis, its a great city, great place, great place to live, that's why I'm running, my love for this city."
