HERNANDO, Miss. - After nine months and consideration of 10 potential new jail sites across the county, DeSoto County Supervisors have accepted a committee's recommendation that first consideration be given to adding on to the existing jail site in Hernando.
If that site proves unfeasible, a 22-acre site in the Hernando Industrial Park is the committee's alternative choice.
DeSoto County Administrator Michael Garriga said first consideration would be given to the existing jail site. The jail decision was reached in a June 15 committee meeting, the results of which were made public Monday.
Cost for a new jail range from $7.5 million for an additional 100-bed facility that could house female inmates up to $8.5 million for a 200-bed male facility.
