Memphis -TN - Headed out of the courtroom and back to jail, Harvey Lewis didn't act like he would answer any of our questions. But when it came to what he wanted to say to his wife, he quickly spoke up.
"I'll say something. You want to blame somebody, blame the commanding officer," Lewis said.
Police say they were looking for Lewis after his wife went to the police station Monday complaining she'd been in a domestic disturbance with him. But Lewis says he was the one being attacked.
"What was she doing to you?"
"Sending me texts and talking crazy on the phone," he said.
Lewis left without detailing much more. He'd just been before a Bolivar County judge whom he told he wanted a speedy trial with no jury and that didn't need an attorney because he'd be representing himself.
"We prefer that not happen. This is a capital murder case and the Supreme Court is going to scrutinize this case," Judge Albert Smith said.
Lewis was arrested around 8pm Tuesday, about 15 hours after a FedEx driver found the bodies of Lewis mother in law and her 4 year old granddaughter, his niece, north of Duncan, Mississippi. Police say Lewis had spent the day hiding in the woods behind a church. He was later recognized while walking alongside Highway 32 in nearby Shelby.
"Basically just thinking, deciding what he was going to do is what he said," said Bolivar County Sheriff's Office Investigator, Charlie Griffin.
Police say during questioning, Lewis confessed to shooting and killing his family members. Investigators believe he'd kidnapped them from his in laws home in neighboring Quitman County. But they haven't released a motive for the murders yet.
