MEMPHIS, Tenn. - With record-setting heat across the Mid-South, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton is encouraging everyone to get out and check on their neighbors, calling the initiative "Check on 4 Door to Door." FOX13's Scott Madaus took his advice.
Citizens who need help or services during this heat wave should contact 211 during the day or 274-7477 after hours.
There are 24 community centers and six senior centers that serve as cooling centers to all citizens. CLICK HERE for a complete list.
The city of Memphis has also opened overnight cooling centers to provide relief from the extreme heat for the city’s homeless.
Women can contact the Salvation Army at (901) 543-8586 for temporary overnight shelter; men can contact the Memphis Union Mission at (901) 526-8434. Families can contact the Emergency Housing Assistance Hotline at (901) 260-4663.
The Memphis Union Mission is also providing daytime cooling centers for women and men at 600 Poplar Avenue until 4:00pm and at 383 Poplar for men only until 7:30pm.
An overnight cooling center is also scheduled to at Foote Homes Community Center on Thursday night.
