MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A new movie premieres Thursday night at Playhouse on the Square about a Memphis team that lost a few games, but is still "undefeated."

The film is appropriately titled Undefeated, and it documents the 2009 season of Manassas High School football team and their first ever play-off appearance.

But the real story of this movie is the love of a team by a coach, and for a coach who promised them hope if they would only believe in themselves.

Bill Courtney, a volunteer coach, and his mostly volunteer staff had quite a challenge. Manassas High School had only 17 players in 2004. By 2009, Courtney, his volunteers, and the school's faculty coach had taught the kids at Manassas that, in Courtney's words, "football doesn't build character, it reveals it."

Undefeated premieres Thursday as part of the Indie Memphis Film Festival at Playhouse on the Square. The showing is already sold out, but the film will release nationwide in February.

This isn't just any indie project; it's already considered a favorite to win an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.

Joining FOX13 with more on the film are Bill Courtney and Jason Smith, sports writer for the Commercial Appeal.
