MEMPHIS, Tenn. - It's a little known neighborhood tucked away just south of downtown Memphis, perched right on a Mississippi River bluff next to historical Indian burial mounds. The area is called "French Fort," and it's poised to become a hot spot in the city once redevelopment gets underway.

Thursday, developers are soliciting ideas from the 35 and under working professionals in the city. The meeting is at the Ornamental Metal Museum, the centerpiece of French Fort. The thought is to turn French Fort into a livable, walkable urban community the young and mobile professional segment is looking for.

French Fort is home to the abandoned, historic U.S. Marine Hospital, a beautiful building with views of the Mississippi River. The hospital, along with the nurses' dormitory and utility building, are slated to become luxury condos according to Desoto Pointe Partners, the owners of the properties.

An old hotel may be turned into an apartment building, and vacant land could become a riverside boutique hotel.

The developer envisions a retail strip with a day care, sandwich joint, and bike shop. The hope is to expand the Greenline and Bluff Walk to French Fort.

Lauren Crews with Desoto Pointe Partners stated, "The river, the trees, the parks, the history, which there is tons of here, this is one of the most historic spots up and down the Mississippi River and Shelby County, we've got all the ingredients we need."
