MEMPHIS, Tenn. - You never know when you're about to get a helping hand. With school starting next week, a charitable group in Memphis decided to pitch in to help out some Memphis City Schools teachers with a little surprise.

Inside Kingsbury High School in north Memphis, the teachers lounge is getting a much needed makeover courtesy of Makeover Memphis.

Brooke Greene, who runs Makeover Memphis, heard about the need and wanted to give back. "Because it has not been done in years, probably I would say 30 years… We wanted to thank teachers in a practical way; this is where they go to eat lunch to hang out."

It was no small task – in fact, Greene said "this project will be probably close to 4 or 5 thousand dollars at the end of the day."

Greene and a handful of volunteers put together a plan. With physical and monetary help from Fellowship Memphis, the room was stripped of old clutter. Walls and tables were painted, the floor cleaned and the bathroom polished.

Volunteer Kim Davis said, "The teachers deserve it. They’re here for our kids and we need to be there for them."

With the new furniture finally bought and paid for, the 4 day mission was almost complete.

Megan Staggs also volunteered because she felt the need to be "giving it back to teachers who work so hard during the year and who are making an impact with the next generation."

For Makeover Memphis, it's a large piece to an unfinished puzzle of making over the city they love and call home.

"It’s the best thing ever,” Greene said. “It makes me feel great; I love it, I love doing this."
