MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Feeding thousands of families was the goal of Feed the Children and New Bethel Temple Church. It was part of the largest one day food give away in Memphis history, but the families involved got more than just food. Thousands of needy families found relief, thanks to a truck stop.
It's a fleet of tractor trailers with a special purpose.
"Feed the Children began an outreach throughout the country called Americans Feeding Americans and they go to major cities and they bring food for people who are in need," said Pastor Aaron Litzsey of New Bethel Temple in Memphis.
Litzey's congregation teamed with "Feed the Children" to offer food to families going through tough times in Memphis.
"We understand a lot of people are struggling," said Pastor Litzsey. "Jobs have gone out overseas, people lost their jobs for numerous reasons, plants closing."
"It's unbelievable because half of the people here never thought they'd find themselves in this situation, out of work for such a long time," said Susan Odell, a representative for Feed the Children.
Already making stops in two other major cities, 8 semis rolled through the Bluff City Wednesday with enough supplies to feed more than 3,000 people.
Odell said, "Each food box can take care of a family for a week, so maybe they can pay their water bill or electric bill and not have to worry about eating tonight because Feed the Children took care of that."
While feeding families was the main objective of Wednesday's caravan, Pastor Litzsey said that providing food wasn't the only goal of this pit stop.
"This is the opportunity for us to reach our arms, which are the arms of love and the arms of Christ and say we love you. In spite of what you're going through or dealing with, we're here for you, no matter what."
