MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Melrose High School basketball legend Bobby "Bingo" Smith was honored by his alma mater Friday morning. The Golden Wild Cats retired Smith's No. 15 jersey at an assembly in the school auditorium. Smith was a four-sport athlete for the Golden Wild Cats in the 1960s.
Smith praised his teammates for his success throughout his career.
"I thought they made me. They supported me. To me, I was just an ordinary player, playing a game I loved to play with fellas I loved to play with," Smith said.
He was one of the first African American athletes recruited by the University of Memphis. However, he chose to attend the University of Tulsa on a basketball scholarship. He was inducted to the University of Tulsa Athletics Hall of Fame in 1984.
Smith was drafted in the first round of the 1969 NBA Draft, chosen sixth overall by the San Diego Rockets. He played for the Rockets one season before joining the original Cleveland Cavaliers team in 1970. He played with the Cavs until 1979, then finished his pro career with the San Diego Clippers in 1980. Smith's No. 7 jersey was retired by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1979.
