Memphis, Tn - In Memphis, it's tough to compete with basketball and football.
And though Kerry Cobb is a former captain of the University of Memphis football team, he's devoting his time to educating the Bluff City's youth about America's favorite pass time.
"They don't see the long run and the possibility of getting a scholarship and going to college. If you're an inner-city kid and your parents are looking to send you to college, like in Memphis, basketball and football provide the means to go to the next level," says Cobb.
Cobb is the founder and president of Memphis Little League. He's made it his mission to make sure boys, ages 5-12 in Memphis, are aware of their options in athletics other than the hardwood or grid iron.
Cobb wants kids to tap their full potential, "The thing we run into now, you may have the most gifted-athletic kids in the inner city but when it comes to baseball, there's an aspect of fundamental baseball. They just don't know anything about the fundamentals."
Learning fundamentals can be tough when teams have a tough time finding adequate practice facilities in the city.
"Other teams, even teams that want to practice, it's tough to find fields without grass growing all in the middle of the infield and bottles and different things like that."
But help is on the way to clean up inner city baseball diamonds. The Bank of America is donating 30-thousand dollars to Memphis Little League, with The Honda Foundation also giving 20-thousand. That money will be used to clean up current playing fields in the city and possibly purchase others.
"We're in the process of trying to speak to the city about some (fields). We've reached out to them and we're trying to reach out to some individuals searching for us also," Cobb says.
Cobb says that renovating the playing fields will make baseball more attractive to families in Memphis.
Then years down the road, America's favorite past-time, could lead to more scholarship opportunities thanks to the fundamentals these youngsters learn in little league.
