Memphis, Tn - Gibson, which has a guitar factory downtown across from FedExForum, attracts visitors from around the world. Only those hoping to take a tour or buy some souvenirs Wednesday were out of luck.
"We planned to end here after 12 days in America and come to Gibson and we're told the federal police have been here," said Todd Collins from Australia.
Collins, along with many others, had the Gibson Guitar Factory on their must do while in Memphis list.
"We're going to try again tomorrow morning and see if things get wrapped up at least so we can go the retail store, hopefully," Jason McGill from Canada said.
The factory shutdown, and employees went home early, after agents with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service raided the place. Gibson hasn't returned our calls, but a handwritten sign outside the door says, closed. Visit us later.
Our camera was rolling as authorities walked out to load a U-haul with materials taken from inside.
"It's a bit upsetting. In my younger years I used to play a little bit and had a Gibson. And unfortunately I can't see the sights here," said Steve Gialouris, also from Australia.
Agents raided Gibson's Nashville location Wednesday as well, and it's not the first time for that factory. In 2009 agents went in amid allegations the company was illegally importing endangered wood from West Africa. No charges were filed. A spokesperson with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service saying the raid in Memphis and Nashville are part of an ongoing investigation.
