Memphis, Tn - The suburbs are looking to create their own school districts and are hoping to get the buildings for free.
County Commissioners plan to vote on Friday on a resolution which surrounds the hot topic.
The resolution would allow the Unified School Board to handle the building negotiations.
Right now, the Unified School Board does have the authority. But, Commissioner Steve Mulroy says they need to strengthen that authority, to help keep the state out of local business.
He says the state legislature could pass a law that could take local authority away. Passing the inter-local agreement, would help keep local control.
"At the end of the day, issue should be who gets to decide and do we want Nashville passing a law taking that authority away or do we want local control," said Mulroy.
By giving the Unified School Board a stronger authority through this agreement, and keeping Nashville out, it's more likely the suburbs would have to pay something for those buildings.
