Memphis, Tn - Memphis is preparing for a $16-million redevelopment project for Elvis Presley Boulevard and the area surrounding Graceland.
Tuesday morning, the Public Works Committee approved and recommended the improvement project be budgeted.
City Councilman Harold Collins spearheaded the drive to make improvements to the area, which also serves as the gateway to the Whitehaven community.
It's been a project that had stalled on the drawing board for decades, even as tourism has brought millions of visitors to the home of Elvis each year.
"The people in Whitehaven have been waiting for 30 years to dedicate commitment to the world that this particular area is important to us and important to our state. And we're excited about it," said Collins.
A vote is expected by the full council on February 21.
