Memphis, TN - Wednesday morning Shelby County deputies responded to a crash on Canada Road just South of Maple Point Cove where a 13-year-old student was hit by a car.
The investigation showed that a school bus had stopped in front of an address on the Southbound side of Canada Road to pick up the student, who is also hearing impaired.
The driver activated the red lights and stop sign at which time the 13-year-old left his driveway and proceeded to board the bus. He was struck by the passenger side of a Jeep Cherokee.
The driver of the Cherokee, Brandon Banks, said he was distracted and did not see the bus or the flashing lights at the time of the accident. The victim suffered injuries to his head and was transported by ambulance to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. He is in critical but stable condition.
Banks was charged with with Failure to Maintain Control and Safe Lookout along with Overtaking and passing a school bus. Alcohol and speed were not factors in the accident.
