MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A Memphis newspaper is reporting that former longtime Mayor Willie Herenton was able to steer an extra $240,000 into his pockets between 2004 and his July retirement this year.
The Commercial Appeal reports that Herenton collected some of the money partly by cashing in unused vacation days and involving himself in a city redevelopment plan.
A federal grand jury is looking into Herenton's dealings as mayor — including a $91,000 payment he got involving the planned redevelopment of a Greyhound bus station.
Herenton denies any wrongdoing. His attorney, Robert Spence, tells the newspaper that there is no connection between the grand jury probe and events in Herenton's private life.
