MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A Mitchell High School student is in police custody after he assaulted a teacher on school property Thursday afternoon.
According to reports from the scene, a physical altercation occurred when the teacher confronted the student. The teacher was treated for cuts and bruises by the school's nurse.
Gerald Darling, Chief of Security for Memphis City Schools, released the following statement on the incident:
"During morning sessions at Mitchell High School today, a student struck one of our dedicated staff members. Such behavior will absolutely not be tolerated and this student was swiftly and strictly disciplined in accordance with Board policy. The student was also immediately taken into custody by the Memphis Police Department. We are committed to providing a safe educational environment and will not accept any behavior that compromises the well-being of our staff or students."
