MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphians are now required to spay or neuter their dogs and cats with a few exceptions but there maybe a more affordable option.
The city of Memphis won't be patrolling, looking for pet owners who have violated the new rule but for those who want to be compliant, there are a few options.
The ordinance should go into effect in two weeks and it pertains to all dogs and cats in Memphis. There are a few exceptions including AKC registered dogs, service animals, pets too old or sick for surgery.
Breeders can get a permit for $200.
Fixing a dog through your vet can cost more than a $100 but there is an affordable option. The non-profit Mid-South Spay and Neuter Services run from $35 to $70.
"Memphis animal services had to euthanize about 13,000 animals last year," says Barbara Standing with Mid South Spay and Neuter. "So if there were wide spread spay and neuter we wouldn't have to do that. And they were, in most cases, a large percentage were adoptable pets."
Mid South Spay and Neuter says there are other benefits for your pet including decreased aggression, better health, and even a longer life.
Mid-South Spay and Neuter does offer free services through grants if you qualify.
