MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The collective sigh of relief was heard here in the Mid-South when a Florida pastor cancelled his plans to burn the Qur'an Saturday. We are hundreds of miles away from the controversy, but the distance isn't the only distinguishable difference. Attitudes towards Muslims here have been quite the opposite than those of that small congregation of 50 in Florida.
"We are all happy that he's called this thing off."
Doctor Muhammed Moinuddin spoke on behalf of Muslims of the Mid-South and quite probably for thousands of non-Muslims who've watched the controversy unfold. But the good doctor's joy isn't just that his Qur'an will not be destroyed but also for the fact that the violence that would have surely followed the burning will be averted.
"There are certain groups among Muslims who would have become extremely angry with the act and might have returned hostililty. Evil with evil," said Dr. Moinuddin.
Dr. Moinuddin said he wasn't surprised that Pastor Jones backed down from his protest. After watching religious leaders from several faiths, along with secretary of state Hillary Clinton, even the president himself condemned the act.
"Usually, political radicals like this are ignored," said Joe Hayden.
Joe Hayden of the University of Memphis explores the question: did the constant media coverage of this controversy simply fan the flames? FOX issued a statement Thursday saying that if Jones went through with the plan; FOX cameras would not be there.
"It's one of the constant dilemmas you have as a journalist... When do you publish what you have and when do you just ignore it?" said Hayden.
Pastor Jones announced that he now plans to meet with the Imam planning to build the mosque and cultural center at Ground Zero. Dr. Moinuddin feels confident that good will come of this for everyone involved.
"It said in the Qur'an, the person who was your enemy will become your close friend. It's quite possible Pastor Jones might become a friend of the Muslims after talking with the Imam himself."
