MEMPHIS, Tenn. - An apartment complex in Frayser is without water because of a broken pipe, and code enforcement may have to evacuate residents if it's not fixed soon.
On the grounds of the Peach Tree Apartments in Frayser tenants are furious. You'd probably be too if you had raw sewage coming out of pipes. Garbage and broken glass is everywhere, there are few working AC units, and no running water.
"We can't wash dishes’ I can't do nothing," one resident told FOX13.
"You just don't know how mad I am, I had to wake up this morning and use the bathroom and all I heard was 'clink-clink-clink'’ that ain't right!" echoed another angry resident.
MLGW and City of Memphis Code Enforcement on the scene told FOX13 News that the water was cut off because of health concerns.
The utility company started an investigation Tuesday morning after complaints of fraud, and discovered utilities were being stolen at the complex.
After a broken pipe was discovered during their investigation, MLGW forced the cut off all of the water in the complex until the pipe is fixed. But, an MLGW spokesperson told FOX13 they won't be the ones to fix the pipe. It's the responsibility of the unidentified new owners who bought the property at auction on Friday.
Now residents who pay rent are wondering what to do.
If the complex doesn't fix the pipe soon, code enforcement can evacuate the complex as a public health concern until the pipe is fixed.
