MEMPHIS, Tenn. - On Labor Day, people at Mirimichi Golf Course were hard at work for the grand re-opening of the place, Millington's own, Justin Timberlake built.
"Why did I have a course built in Memphis? It's a completely selfish way for me to come home and play golf all the time. So if you guys want to enjoy it too feel free," said Timberlake.
The course was shut down last winter as they worked to improve the course and introduce the Mirimichi Performance and Learning Center which helps golfers improve their game and equip them with the right equipment.
"Everyone knows if they slice or hack it, this data lets us know exactly why. Leads us to the right equipment, we can make adjustments and get them to the right equipment no questions asked," said Alec Walker, golf professional at Mirimichi
Re-opening the course was not an easy task.
In the middle of construction Mirimichi, along with Memphis and Millington, was hit with the Thousand Year Flood in May and the course was under water.
"We put in a couple of phone calls to ask if it happens again, can it wait another 1,000 years?" said Timberlake. "It was one of those situations where you know someone who was affected by it. So we were all devastated by it, not just for Mirimichi, but for Millington and everyone who was affected."
During today's presentation, Timberlake presented a certificate from the Golf Environmental Organization since Mirimichi will be one of the first green golf courses.
"Mirimichi not only has been certified by GEO. It's the first certified Golf Course in the Americas. What I mean by that is North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean," said Bud Smart, Golf Environmental Organization.
This could help lure a major championship to the Millington area, something the Mirimichi family would love to see happen.
"As far as getting a major championship, we're going to wave our flag as high and proud as we can and hope that we can make some waves in that direction," said Timberlake.
