MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Helping the homeless on Labor Day is a tradition that started back in the 80's for one local man.
.
Monday afternoon, Patrick Carter continued his mission, a tradition 26 years in the making.

"It's important because there are people that will not get a meal today unless we provide it," said Carter.

Carter, with the help of volunteers who donated their time on Labor Day, served the homeless population of Memphis.

"We're providing means, were providing toiletries, shoes, clothing, whatever we can do to help out."

For those who pitch in on their day off, it's a labor of love.

"We have to go out and help and give back to the community."

For those without a home and food to eat, Monday's generosity meant even more.

26 years ago, Carter said he started this event because of his mother.

"Much is given, much is expected and should be done," said Carter.

26 years later, he said helping those in need has become a part of life.

"It's not for me but for the people and we are very grateful."
