Shelby County Trustee Paul Mattila died Friday after a long bout with lung cancer. He was 65 years old.

Mattila served in the Trustees office since 1997, and was elected to head the office in 2008.

"I have known Paul and Margaret for many years. Paul was a competent and dedicated public servant. He made a career of helping others with a warm smile and firm handshake. Not only is this a loss for Shelby County, but also for our state and nation," said Congressman John Tanner (TN -08).

"Mr. Mattila was truly honored to serve the taxpayers of Shelby County. Throughout the years he was especially dedicated to helping senior citizens receive benefits to reduce their rising tax burdens. At all times he was so proud of his employees and their ability to produce outstanding results even during uncertain economic times," said Debra Gates, Deputy Trustee.

"Our community has lost a truly genuine and devoted public servant with the passing of Shelby County Trustee Paul Mattila. He was definitely someone with whom I enjoyed working in his official capacity as well as some of our time out in the community on the campaign trial," said Shelby County mayor A C Wharton.

"For Paul, statistics and printouts never blurred his focus on the fact that he served real people. He showed this by remaining extremely accessible and sensitive to the needs of citizens, points that helped to shape the outlook of his staff and the operations of the trustees office. Our prayers and thoughts are extended to his wife, Margaret, and the entire family. He will be deeply missed."

Gates will immediately assume the responsibilities of Trustee.

Mr. Mattila is survived by his wife Margaret, 4 children and 6 grandchildren.
