MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Last week, Memphis City Council Woman Janis Fullilove withdrew an anti-discrimination ordinance from consideration by the council. The ordinance would have prevented the city from discriminating against workers based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Ms. Fullilove then planned another resolution that would have done the same thing for city contracts. That would essentially prevent any private company working on a city project from discriminating against a worker based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

But the whole thing was scrapped, when supporters saw they weren't going to get enough council support to pass it. Fullilove's measure was backed by the Tennessee Equality Project. Their aim is to end discrimination based on sexual orientation throughout the state.

Jonathan Cole joined FOX13 live in the studio to talk about the ordinance plus FOX13's Jill Monier hit the streets to see if people think the gay and lesbian community needs to be protected by the law.
