A woman is dead after her car was hit by a train at a railroad crossing in Byhalia Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 3:00pm at Highway 178 and Highway 309 just outside downtown Byhalia.

The female driver, was later identified as 21-year old Linah Luana Muhammed Young, was crossing the railroad tracks driving a late model white Chevy Lumina when the train struck her car and killed her on impact. Witnesses say that she had the music turned up and did not hear the train coming. It was also indicated that Young was on her way into work in Collierville.

According to witnesses at the scene, the vehicle was dragged approximately 300 yards before the westbound train was able to come to a complete stop.

The intersection has a railroad crossing sign; however, there is no stop sign, flashing lights or traffic rails to alert drivers to oncoming trains. Residents state this is not the first time there has been a fatality at the same intersection, and that buildings near the crossing obstruct drivers' view.

Byhalia Police are investigating the incident.
