MEMPHIS, Tenn. - It's been a month since Lorenzen Wright's body was discovered in a field in Southeast Memphis. Police ruled Wright's death a homicide but no arrests have been made and investigators have been unusually quiet while fans say they want closure in the case.
First, the hometown hero went missing. Then, police found his lifeless body in a secluded field. A community memorial service followed, bringing out thousands. But not much more has happened since then, in the form of answers for the hundreds of people still wanting to know who did this, and why?
It's calm, quiet, and still. Teddy bears, flowers, and signs are the only sign of the spot where police made a grisly discovery on July 28. There was a far more chaotic scene that day, one month ago, when friends, family, and fans crowded the street in Southeast Memphis where Lorenzen Wright's body was discovered.
"It was a fine young man who died a tragic death," said fan Herb Kneeland.
One month later, the community still knows nothing about who is responsible for the former Tiger star's death.
"Our Memphis Police Department has one of the best homicide divisions in the country and I think sooner or later, they'll get to the bottom of it, and get some answers for the public," said family friend JoePulliam.
Police Director Larry Godwin said right now there are no new details to release in the case, but he said investigators are following up on every lead, and asks anyone with information to continue to call police.
"We have a good police department but sometimes we need to speed the process in order to come to a conclusion in the case because this entire city was hurt by this," Kneeland said.
And until more information is released, some people say the city can never heal. Joe Pulliam said the murder was all the talk over lunch on Friday.
"We just got finished talking about it sitting in Ching's eating wings. His name came up. He'll never be forgotten," said Pulliam.
And police assure the public, the case isn't forgotten. It's just a matter of time.
Police urge anyone with information, no matter how big or small, to come forward. Your tips could be the missing pieces to the puzzle investigators are trying to put together. Call Crimestoppers at 528-CASH.
