Lorenzen Wright Murder Investigation Turns Unexpected Corners

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - More details are coming to light in the Lorenzen Wright murder investigation. Documents reveal what the slain NBA player's ex-wife Sherra Wright told police about the last night she saw Lorenzen alive, and what police were searching for inside her home.

According to court documents, Sherra Wright says the last night she saw her ex-husband he left the house two different times. The first time he was supposedly carrying a box of drugs, the second time with money. But, where he was going and who he was with is still of interest to police.

Memphis Police say their investigation into Lorenzen Wright's murder is stretching beyond the city of Memphis.

While out of town for a chief's conference in Knoxville, Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin told FOX13 by phone that homicide investigators have traveled to several cities in search of Wright's contacts and associates.

"You've got a man here that played professional ball and traveled extensively," said Godwin. "We're tracking pretty much everywhere he's been in the last two months and we're going to reach out to those areas."

Now two weeks after Wright was found dead, Godwin said in this investigation they're doing things they don't normally do to try and crack the case.

"His extensive travel has caused us to have to reach out to a lot of different cities, talk to a lot of different people… Some are quick. They hadn't talk to him, hadn't seen him, you know what I mean. Some are a little more involved."

Analysis of the evidence is another thing police say they're waiting on. According to a search warrant executed earlier this month, investigators went to ex-wife Sherra's Collierville home and removed a letter as well as paperwork on firearms, ammunition and cell phones.

The fence surrounding the field where Wright's body was found has been restored and the area's been posted with a 'No Trespassing' sign. But you can tell that people are still sneaking in to get a look.

The crime scene off Callis Cutoff in Southeast Memphis had been open for people to see for some time.

Sherra Wright said when she saw her ex-husband for the last time he left her home with a box of drugs and money, but she didn't know who he left with.

Police said with no suspect in sight, they're still looking at everybody. Court documents also show police are comparing ownership papers for Wright's missing guns with spent shell casings found near his body. Investigators are also toward the paperwork on his missing cell phones to try and indentify who Wright was on the phone with before he left his ex-wife's home that night.
