MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The new and improved Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium is still very much a work in progress, but hopes are high for the finished product of this extreme make over.
Construction workers have started putting down sod for the highly anticipated Tiger Lane. The tail-gaters paradise should be finished by season's kickoff.
"It's going to be terrific out there. The fast improvements to the entire area surrounding LIberty Bowl Memorial Stadium-there will be a halo effect around the stadium. It will be pedestrian oriented and you have Tiger Lane and that's like a landing strip," said Steve Erhardt, Direcotor of the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
Improvements at the Liberty Bowl aren't limited to the exterior. Exciting upgrades have been made for fans and players inside the stadium.
"One thing is for sure is there are great new restrooms and facilities so everyone is going to be in a modern restroom. There are new concession areas and we're building TV spots so when people go to the concession area they can watch action on the field. With the new locker rooms, teams are impressed and there are enough lockers for everyone," said Earhardt.
Soon, this construction zone will be filled with happy tail-gaters in an atmosphere and stadium that rivals some of the best football venues in the south. And that experience could get even better in years to come with the possibility of a new jumbo-tron.
"I think in the next few years that is an important factor with new technology and video as we know is so far advanced and the jumbo-tron at the stadium is now an older generation. Also with all the other universities putting in great new jumbo-trons, that's an important thing to consider the next few years," Earhardt said.
The improvements at the stadium will be finished in time for the Southern Heritage Classic, which is set for September 12th.
