MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis City Schools Board of Commissioners elected new officers for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.
Dr. Freda Williams, At-Large Position 1, was elected President. Dr. Williams has served on the Board since being sworn in as the Interim At-Large Position 1 Commissioner and was subsequently elected to a full four-year term in November of 2008.
Stephanie Gatewood, District 1, was re-elected as Vice-President. Ms.Gatewood has a degree in Public Administration with an emphasis in public policy. In addition to her duties as Commissioner, Ms.Gatewood was appointed to the Executive Task Force for Student Achievement for the Council of Urban Boards of Education, as well as to the Executive Committee of the Council of Great City Schools.
The Memphis City Schools Board of Education has nine members, who are all residents of Memphis. They are elected by the citizens at the general election in November to serve a four-year term. Seven members are elected by district to represent a specific area within the city, and two members are elected as at large members to represent the entire city.
