MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Thursday the City of Memphis Land Use Control Board rejected a proposal to tear down a historic church in Midtown for a CVS Pharmacy.
The proposal called for the demolition of the Union Avenue Methodist Church at the corner of Cooper St and Union Ave, a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The CVS Pharmacy that would have been built on the property would be directly adjacent to an Ike's Pharmacy.
Around 200 citizens attended the meeting at City Hall, expressing their concern on preserving the Midtown landmark church. The current owners of the property, St. Luke's United Methodist Church, had recently merged congregations with Union Ave. Methodist.
