Herenton Uses Profanity to Describe Opponent

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Mayor Willie Herenton's legacy is seen in South Memphis with a statue, a building in his name and bumper stickers in support.

"I like Mayor Herenton, I think he did a good job for the city of Memphis," said Herenton supporter Joe Harris. "I would like to see him go to Washington and represent the city of Memphis."

This congressional race is already getting heated. In an interview with the Memphis Flyer, Herenton used profanity to describe his political rival Steve Cohen, saying "I've known Cohen for over 30 years and to be honest with you, he's an a**hole."

Mayor Herenton refused an interview with FOX13 Thursday, but Congressman Cohen says the tongue-lashing from Herenton misses the mark and he wants a positive campaign.

"People need to come together and work together, and that's what we need in this city," said Cohen. "We're going to have a move for change and hope with a new mayor, and change and hope is what it's all about – that's bringing people together and not dividing people."

Congressman Cohen doesn't expect race to be a factor when people hit the polls, saying Memphis has moved beyond black and white. The 9th Congressional District is mostly African American, and has been represented by the Ford family for decades.

"I think it's an old thing, it's over in Memphis," responded Cohen. "Barack Obama was elected President. I supported Barack Obama, the mayor didn't. Barack Obama brought people together; got the majority of votes – black, white, Hispanic, Asian, you name it - I did the same thing."

It could be a battle. In the heart of the 9th Congressional District is where Mayor Herenton grew up in South Memphis. There's even a statue of him – but is his base still strong?

"I just like the guy. Even with his controversy, it doesn't matter," said one Herenton supporter.

But, others in the neighborhood Herenton grew up in say he may need out of politics.

"Mayor Herenton, he's just not doing too good here in Memphis. I think he's raising taxes more than anything."

Even a long time Herenton supporter is no longer sticking to his guns.

"I think Cohen has done a very great job for all the people, it's not a matter of race."
