WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. - A dashcam video from a police SUV shows teenager Joseph Kane opening fire with an AK-47 on two West Memphis police officers before taking off in a van with his father.
Prosecutors released the video Wednesday as part of a preliminary report clearing police of any wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of Jerry Kane and his son, 16-year-old Joseph.
The video, taken from Officer Bill Evans' police SUV dashboard, begins with what appears to be a standard traffic stop. The video had no audio but shows Jerry Kane stepping outside his minivan at Evans' request, then pointing emphatically at his Ohio license plate.
Moments later, Joseph comes out of the passenger side of the van, firing an AK-47. He fires for less than a minute, then gets back in the van with his father.
A prosecutor has found no indications of wrongdoing by police in West Memphis who shot and killed the father and son who were sought for the shooting deaths of two police officers.
Prosecutor Mike Walden said Jerry and Joseph Kane would have faced capital murder charges had they not been killed in a shootout with police in the parking lot of a West Memphis Walmart in May.
Arkansas state police had taken all dash cam video as part of their investigation.
The prosecutor released his report on the shootings Wednesday.
West Memphis police officers Bill Evans and Brandon Paudert, the police chief's son, were killed May 20 along Interstate 40 after Evans pulled over a minivan driven by 45-year-old Jerry Kane, of Forest, Ohio, who was traveling with his son Joseph.
