MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The City of Memphis Division of Park Services announced they will open their first dog park. Release the Leash will take place Saturday June 5th at 11:00 a.m.
The new park will be located at 2599 Avery Avenue, behind the Board of Education.
Hours of operation for the park are the same as they are for all city parks, 6 a.m.-8 p.m. March 15th -October 31st during summer hours and 6 a.m.-6 p.m. November 15th - March 14th during winter hours.
“More and more urban cities are incorporating dog parks as a progressive component of their park system. The Memphis Dog Park is something that we have been wanting to provide to the citizens of Memphis for some time,” said Cindy Buchanan, Director of Park Services.
This will be the first dog park and Park services said it will serve as a test site for future projects. They said this test site will also help identify any potential safety issues that may arise and how to address them in the future.
The off leash fenced in park has an area designated for dogs under 25 lbs. and 25 lbs. and over. To be eco friendly, bio degradable doggie waste bags are provided so that owners can help keep the park clean and free of pet waste. The park has benches for owners to relax and watch the dogs play.
So that dogs have a safe and fun environment to play in, all dogs must be licensed and vaccinated/immunized and each dog owner is responsible for the behavior and action of their dog.
Due to the fact that this is a pilot project owners will also need to bring water for their dogs.
