MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Plans were announced Thursday to tear down Union Avenue Methodist Church in midtown to build a new CVS Pharmacy store.
According to the Memphis Daily News , the drugstore's developer Hart-Redd LLC filed plans with the City of Memphis Office of Planning and Development.
The property, which sits at the corner of Union and Cooper, is directly across the street from Ike's, which was recently acquired by CVS's chief competitor Walgreen's.
Memphis Heritage, the group that recently halted big-box development in Overton Square, called a town hall meeting Thursday night to save the church. The meeting will be held at Howard Hall, 2282 Madison Avenue, from 6:00pm – 7:30pm.
CVS has several construction projects planned or in progress for the immediate vicinity of Memphis Walgreen's locations, such as Stage Rd and Covington Pike and Park Ave and Highland.
