Memphis, Tn - Outside the Washington Vehicle Inspection Station downtown, a line a cars, trucks, and SUVs’ wait in a long line to either pass or fail their test.

And while they wait, City Hall Board Members talked about completely changing they way the city inspects vehicles.

Two proposals came up in the council meeting. First, from councilmen Bill Morrison and Jim Strickland who want the city to do away with certain parts of a normal inspection.

The plan would effectively halt the testing of windshield wipers, lights, and blinkers which they say add un-needed times to an inspection that many say already takes to long.

The other proposed ordinance is sponsored by Councilman Myron Lowery and would allow those who drive a vehicle that is 4-years old or newer at the date of inspection to completely bypass the inspection.

Not a part of the ordinance is an exemption to hybrid vehicles that Lowery says he will add before the next reading in 2-weeks. “I’m hopeful that this will move forward.”

Both resolutions passed their initial committee introductions.
