Memphis, Tn - The sight of the Mid-South Fair grounds over the years has become a let down for the community which calls that part of Memphis home.

Many of the buildings are in ruins and former attractions are being sold off.

But, Monday afternoon, the Salvation Army marched in after what’s been a long journey, breaking ground on their Kroc Community Center.

The Salvation Army purchased the bare land in august of 2007 and they've been on a mission for money since, raising 25 million locally and receiving 61 million from the Kroc Estate.

When complete, the Kroc Center in Memphis will be one of 31 across the country and the only in Tennessee.

The building will feature a state of the art sports and multi-challenge area, a chapel, theater, pool and slash park.

Memphis Mayor AC Wharton says this project will encourage youth in the city and the area surrounding the fair grounds to stay off the street and make good decisions.
