Memphis, Tn - Memphis rock icon Alex Chilton died Wednesday.
He was 59 years old. The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack. Big Star bandmate Jody Stephens confirmed his death to the media on Wednesday evening.
Chilton rocketed to fame at the young age of 16 when The Box Tops scored a hit record with the song “The Letter.”
In the 70s, Chilton formed the Memphis based power pop group Big Star. The band produced several critically acclaimed albums throughout the decade.
The band had planned a concert at the Levitt Shell.
He is survived by his wife and son.
