MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The mother of an infant that was allegedly thrown down a trash chute by the child's father has been charged with filing a false police report.

32-year old Rachelle Nelson was taken into custody Monday morning.

Police responded to a domestic call Sunday at the Pinnacle Apartments on Bellevue, on reports that a one-month old infant was tossed down a garbage chute from an 11th floor apartment. Police located the infant inside a dumpster on the ground floor. The baby was taken to LeBonheur Children's Medical Center with non-critical injuries.

The child's father, who was reportedly fighting with Nelson prior to the child being injured, was sought as a suspect in the incident.

Due to the child's non-critical injuries and the nature of the alleged incident, Memphis Police launched an investigation into Nelson's statement.

After questioning the child's father and witnesses, as well as physical evidence that it would've been impossible for an infant to surviveĀ  a 110 foot drop into a metal container without serious injury, Nelson was charged with filing a false report.

Ms. Nelson's children were taken into the custody of the Department of Child Services. She made her first court appearance Wednesday morning where her bond was set at $75,000.
