MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A North Memphis man is dead after being shot by police Thursday morning. Investigators said a Bartlett officer was trying to serve the man with a warrant, when the suspect approached him with a weapon.

Yellow police tape criss-crosses Stanridge Street in North Memphis.

Karen Rudolph, with the Memphis Police Department, said "Bartlett Police Department was on the scene, they were executing a drug warrant."

A Bartlett Police officer was serving the warrant at a home on the 1300-block.

"As they entered the home, they were approached by a male 43 years of age that was armed with a weapon. He was armed with a weapon and did point it at the Bartlett police officer," said Rudolph.

Memphis Police said the officer felt threatened and fired a single, fatal shot at the victim neighbors are calling Malcolm.

Shirley Watkins, who knew the victim, described the man as "cool, we all kicked it together."

People who grew up in the area said Stanridge is like a small family, and said they are heartbroken to lose a man who bothered no one and helped everyone.

"He really didn't bother nobody, he stayed on the porch, he talked to everybody," said Rita Yancey.

Family members who arrived on the scene did not take the news well. One of the victim's sons asked questions of Memphis Police, who are now taking over the shooting investigation.

Yancey said "my niece is taking it hard, his son is taking it hard, his brother is taking it hard."

Authorities said the Bartlett officer serving the warrant had followed all proper procedures by informing Memphis Police prior to arriving on Stanridge. While the investigation continues, everyone on the street plans to pray for the family.

Watkins said "we got God in our hearts and minds, we just gonna let him work it out."
