Memphis, Tn - The city of Memphis is one step closer to "Tiger Drive," although there's a new obstacle in its way.

Demolition on the buildings surrounding the Liberty Bowl could begin this week. But one building will not come down for at least two weeks, the facilities building, right in the center of the proposed Tiger Drive.

The issue was a surprise to the council members who approved the demolition without issue Monday night.

"That was simply not an item that was elaborated on," says Memphis City Council Member Wanda Halbert. "So it was a little shocking to be an issue today."

With the demolition of all the Liberty Land buildings, Steve Ehrhart, Executive Director of the Auto Zone Liberty Bowl was worried he would have no where to host the 5,000 out of town guest drawn to Memphis for the bowl game.

"The city approached us and said if we tear this down we'll come up with a replacement for your event," says Ehrhart.

The city came up with the idea of a temporary tent. But one that could hold 5,000 people is estimated to cost more than $100,000.

"I think the Liberty Bowl people pay about $20,000 a year for the arena, we have to figure out how much the extra cost of the tent would be and decide who pays for that."

So while it’s being worked out, the building will stand. And it stands in the way of Tiger Drive, which needs to be designed and go out for bids by April in order to be done in time for the first game of the season.

"It’s a beautiful entrance into the Fairgrounds project," says Halbert.
