Judge Orders $8M Backpay to MPD Officers in Discrimination Suit

Updated: Friday, 05 Mar 2010, 4:45 PM CST

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - 28 Memphis Police officers are looking forward to their long awaited promotions to the rank of lieutenant after a judge ruled in their favor in a long-standing discrimination lawsuit.

Thursday night Federal Judge Bernice Donald ordered the immediate promotions of the African American officers.

The officers sued 10 years ago, after they say they were denied the promotion because of their race.

Judge Donald also ordered back pay for the officers.
