Memphis, Tn - So, just moments after officially filing on Wednesday afternoon to run in the Democratic Party Primary for Shelby County Mayor, Joe Ford, was thoroughly prepared to defend his decision to run, months after publically promising he wouldn't.
“People change they mind. We do it everday. We all change our mind. I changed my mind,” Ford said.
The current interim County Mayor insists his "flip-flop" is a response to the will of the people and his own comfort level with the job. “The citizens of Shelby County have spoken loud and spoken clear. We want you to run.”
Barring anyone else having a change of heart by Thursday's filing deadline, Ford figures to battle it out with Shelby County Commissioner Deidre Malone for the party's nod to, in all probability, face unchallenged Republican Sheriff Mark Luttrell in the General election.
As for running against Malone in a race some predict could turn ugly, Ford asserts he'll be staying on the high road during his campaign. “I'm gonna run a positive campaign. I'm gonna..a campaign to elect Joe Ford and I'm gonna leave any...any other kind of politics out of it. You won't see me...I've never run a campaign negative.”
