Test Results Broken Down by Race

Germantown, Tn - Tuesday afternoon, across the Mid-South, residents are reacting to words reportedly said by Germantown High School Principal Ted Horrell.

"I think he should have handled that in a different way," said concerned citizen Brian Wallace.

Dr. Horrell told FOX13 news on Friday that he presented the results of the Tennessee Report Card in class meetings, detailing the state reported break downs, of both good and bad students.

"So we basically shared the data with the students that said where we were, as of the report card last year," said Horrell.

The sharing of that information is where this controversy starts, because the break down was in black and white. The results, according to Horrell, broke down low test results by race and social-economics.

"I did say we have some groups of students that are performing better on standardized tests than others."

He added the intent was not to single out any ethnic group who attend Germantown High School.

"I certainly didn't say that white students are smarter than black students."

The bottom line, he said, is detailing where the test score problems are, and how to address them, not to offend.

"I apologize that that was the reaction, I apologize for sharing that information because it made some students upset or uncomfortable."

But, confused is what many Mid-Southerners are.

"Definitely (a) different way to handle it, especially being a principal, he should have more understanding of ways to handle other than that," said Wallace.
