Memphis, Tn - Some on the Shelby County Commission want the suburbs to pay for the school buildings that want to create Municipal School Districts.

The commission held a special meeting Friday afternoon to pass a resolution about school buildings. It passed, 7- 5.

The resolution outlines what the county should seek for school buildings when the County Mayor negotiates with the School Board.

The school board owns the buildings, but the County government paid for them. The agreement asks the School Board to get fair market value for the schools, fair compensation, or transfers them in such a way that doesn't create more debt for the county.

The county is in debt more than $1.5 billion. This agreement was passed to try and take action before state legislators create law that the schools must be given for free.

The School Board is now in control and will likely meet to also pass the agreement soon.
